The People Power Party stated on the 1st that it has not considered changing its party name at the leadership level.
Shin Dong-uk, the chief spokesperson, met with reporters after the party's emergency committee meeting at the National Assembly that day and responded to the question, "Has the leadership ever discussed or considered changing the party name?" by saying, "No."
Reports emerged the previous day that a new party called the New Future Democratic Party, led by Lee Nak-yon and others, demanded the People Power Party change its name as a condition for a 'big tent' coalition, but the leadership has officially reviewed this.
Han Dong-hoon, a candidate in the presidential primary, stated during a TV debate with candidate Kim Moon-soo the previous day, "There have been reports that Lee Nak-yon's side demanded, 'Change the party name,' and the leadership said 'It is possible to make a promise to change the party name after the presidential election.' This is very inappropriate," he said. Candidate Kim also remarked, "To say how to change the party name is the same as asking to change the name of another family's child. It is something that should not be said."
Shin, the chief spokesperson, noted, "I saw that two individuals considered it a given that such discussions took place (within the party leadership) and were debating, but we have not said such things."
He commented on the expectation that Han Duck-soo, the acting Prime Minister, would resign that afternoon to run for president, saying, "There has been no consultation or discussion at all with our party regarding Acting Prime Minister Han's resignation or subsequent political moves," and added, "His political moves are his own judgment."
Regarding the timeline for unification with Acting Prime Minister Han, he stated, "Unification can occur until the day before the election. Politics is organic," and added, "It is not that we have set any specific timeline."
