People Power Party Chairman Kwon Young-se said on the 1st regarding the response to the hacking incident of SK Telecom's SIM card information, "It wouldn't be surprising if a company that causes such a major accident and responds so inadequately were to close its doors immediately."
Chairperson Kwon noted at a meeting of the emergency response committee held at the National Assembly that "the SKT SIM card hacking incident is already a significant issue, but the response to the incident is, without a doubt, one of the worst of the worst."
He stated about SKT's response, "They did not notify quickly at the time the incident occurred, did not explain properly, and did not provide specific guidelines for action to prevent damage," adding, "The incident was caused by SKT, yet the public had to line up in front of the stores and even after waiting for hours, they could not obtain the SIM cards."
He continued, "SKT violated the obligation to report within 24 hours even though they were aware of the hacking situation and also refused the Korea Internet & Security Agency's victim support services," noting, "Yesterday, it was revealed in the Communications Commission that the SIM card information, which can be said to be key in identifying subscriber identities, was not encrypted."
Chairperson Kwon stated, "SKT is the top mobile carrier with 24 million subscribers and provides services to government agencies, including the military. However, when looking at the level of security and incident response, they appear to show no sense of responsibility whatsoever," urging, "Secure the SIM cards as quickly as possible and ensure home delivery for all customers so that the public does not have to wait in line. Significantly strengthen and transparently disclose security systems such as financial identity verification to reassure the public."
He also emphasized, "To prevent secondary damage, mobilize all means such as social media (SNS), email, internet, and mail to inform the public of action guidelines," insisting that "field support must be provided for the elderly and marginalized populations."
