On the 28th, Ahn Cheol-soo and Han Dong-hoon, candidates for the People Power Party's presidential primary, visited the Chungcheong and Daejeon regions to appeal for support. This is interpreted as an effort to target voters in Daejeon and the Chungcheong region, which is seen as a 'middle-ground stronghold,' just one day before the announcement of the results of the second primary.
Candidate Ahn met with reporters right after a meeting with representatives of the student delegation opposing impeachment from Chungbuk National University at a cafe in Cheongju that day and said, "The most important thing for the development of the Chungcheong region is administrative integration. If the Chungcheong region has a population of over 5 million, it can produce goods on its own and revitalize the economy."
He stated, "We need to properly construct roads and railways to allow logistics and people to move freely," and added, "The legal and financial powers monopolized by the state should also be transferred to local governments through constitutional amendments."
He continued, "Through constitutional amendments, we must make Sejong City the administrative capital," adding, "The installation of KTX stopping at Sejong Station is absolutely necessary."
Candidate Ahn also visited the National Daejeon Memorial Park afterward to pay respects at the grave of Corporal Chae Mo, who died during the search operation for missing persons due to flooding while protecting the western sea.
Candidate Han Dong-hoon also visited Cheongju that day and emphasized, "I am the one who pledged to completely transfer the National Assembly to Sejong," stating, "It is important for regional balanced development and national development that not just a branch but the entire National Assembly be relocated."
Candidate Han noted, "The issue of transferring the administrative capital is a matter of constitutional amendment. I believe I am the candidate with the strongest will to promote and succeed in this if I become president," adding, "I promised to serve only three years in the presidency to facilitate this, and I will do my best to create a proper constitution that can be used for the next 50 or 100 years."
Additionally, Candidate Han visited the Yukgeori Comprehensive Market in Cheongju that day to appeal for support from supporters, merchants, and citizens, and held a meeting with officials from the Merchants' Association. He also presented national defense policy after paying respects to fallen patriots at Hyeonchungsa in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.
The People Power Party plans to announce the results of the second primary, which will narrow the candidates down to two, on the 29th. The second primary is conducted by combining the results of party member voting, which accounts for 50%, and the results of a public opinion survey, which also accounts for 50%.
