The People Power Party announced on the 25th that the number of party members eligible to vote in the internal primary to select candidates for the 21st presidential election has been confirmed at over 765,000. If a candidate receives a 'majority' of votes in the second primary result on the 29th, the final presidential candidate will be determined, and 'party responsibilities' will be granted immediately.
Hojunseok, spokesperson for the People Power Party Election Management Committee, met with reporters after concluding the sixth Election Management Committee meeting at the National Assembly on that morning, saying, "The final voter list was confirmed at 76,573. This is a 34% increase compared to the size of the voter list (about 570,000) during the 2021 national convention when former President Yoon Suk-yeol was selected as the presidential candidate. The voter list consists of all responsible party members and general members who have paid party dues at least once within the past year.
According to the People Power Party, the regional proportion of the voter list is approximately 43% from the Yeongnam region (including Busan, Daegu, and Ulsan), which is the highest. This is followed by ▲ the Seoul metropolitan area at about 39% ▲ Chungcheong region (including Daejeon and Gangwon) at about 15% ▲ Honam region (including Jeju) at about 3%.
Unlike the first primary, which reflected 100% of public opinion polls, the People Power Party's second and third primaries will determine results by reflecting the voter list's votes and the general public opinion poll results at a rate of 50% each. The opinion poll will be conducted through telephone interviews.
The second primary results will be announced at 2 p.m. on the 29th. This time, the vote rates and rankings of each candidate will not be disclosed.
If a candidate receives a majority of votes among the four candidates, the final candidate will be confirmed on that day. The Election Management Committee decided to grant 'party duties' to the candidate in this case. According to Article 74 of the party constitution, the person selected as the presidential candidate is granted the 'party duties' which prioritize all rights related to party affairs until the presidential election, even if they are recognized as the People Power Party's presidential candidate before being officially nominated at the May 3 national convention.
However, if there is no majority winner in the second primary results, the top two candidates will conduct additional voting and public opinion polls on the 1st and 2nd of next month to select the final candidate at the national convention. The May 3 national convention will be held at 2 p.m. at KINTEX in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province.
