The Democratic Party of Korea urged the People Power Party on the 24th to actively cooperate in the review of the supplementary budget. It also pressured that it would activate the relevant standing committee as soon as the 'Korea-U.S. 2+2 trade consultation' scheduled for the next day was concluded.
Jin Sung-jun, chair of the Democratic Party's policy committee, said at a meeting held in the National Assembly, "A supplementary budget of 12 trillion won is merely a drop in the bucket for supporting our economy," adding, "According to the Bank of Korea, the economic growth effect of a 12 trillion won supplementary budget is only 0.1 percentage point, but research shows that implementing 30 trillion won would increase our economic growth rate by 0.9 percentage points."
He continued, "Therefore, a bold increase in the supplementary budget is essential," emphasizing, "The key is the People Power Party."
Regarding the Strategy and Finance Committee meeting held the previous day, Jin noted, "The perception shown by the People Power Party was that 'an increase is not always effective.'" He added, "The government's position is that it does not oppose increases if there is an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties. While this government stance is also somewhat pathetic, the key is the People Power Party."
He reiterated, "I urge the People Power Party to seriously face the dire economic situation and actively cooperate in the review of the increase."
He added pressure, saying that as the '2+2 trade consultation' with the U.S. approaches, "We will immediately activate the relevant standing committee as soon as the Korea-U.S. trade consultation is completed."
Jin stated, "The biggest concern is the risk posed by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is acting in place of the president," and predicted, "Han is expected to announce his candidacy based on the results of the tariff negotiations with the U.S. I am concerned about this starting from today's state of the union address."
He sincerely hoped that there would be no further wounds inflicted on the people with self-delusional speeches.
Earlier, at the Strategy and Finance Committee meeting held the previous day, the Democratic Party and the People Power Party clashed over the 12 trillion won supplementary budget proposal. The Democratic Party emphasized the need for a second supplementary budget and regional love gift certificates, while the People Power Party argued that a large-scale supplementary budget was inappropriate. Meanwhile, on this day, each standing committee held budget subcommittee meetings.
