Hong Joon-pyo, a candidate in the People Power Party presidential primary, said on the 23rd, "I will lead a one team involving all primary candidates to win in the big tent final."
The term big tent refers to a strategy in presidential elections and elsewhere where politically diverse factions unite to nominate a single candidate.
On that day, Hong Joon-pyo held a vision presentation meeting for the 'Sunjin advanced country national reform 100+1' at his election office in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul, and noted, "I will realize a grand coalition through political alliances with all forces against Lee Jae-myung and cultivate a unified political force to lead a completely new country, an advanced nation."
While introducing policy tasks related to 'national integration,' Hong noted, "I will eliminate the left-right conflict. The vicious cycle of political polarization and factional confrontation has continued for 20 years," and added, "I will move toward cooperative politics and practical collaborative politics."
He also said, "We need to include mechanisms that can ease extreme confrontational structures in constitution amendments," and added, "I will introduce a four-year two-term system, a presidential and vice-presidential system, a bicameral system, and prioritize national interests and the happiness of the people, leading the country without the distinction of left or right politics."
To this end, Hong mentioned plans to immediately appoint a practical talent among active party lawmakers who can communicate with the opposition by replacing the chief of staff system with a minister of political affairs as soon as he becomes president.
Regarding the point that his support base overlaps with Kim Moon-soo, who is categorized in the anti-impeachment faction, Hong said, "Since it's a party primary, all four candidates have overlapping support bases." He stated, "The primary is about choosing who can catch the candidate Lee Jae-myung. Party members have sufficient political insight, so I believe they can adequately assess who among the four can catch this candidate."
Regarding his stance on impeachment, Hong said, "Considering the political responsibility over (martial law), wouldn't it have been better to give him the opportunity to resign on his own?" and questioned, "Was there a need to expel someone by opposing or supporting impeachment?"
In this context, Hong also mentioned Han Dong-hoon. Hong stated, "It should have been the ruling party leader (then Han) to prevent national governance paralysis, but since it was bothersome, he nitpicked at everything, so didn't the president have any choice?" and added, "That is why it was politically self-destructive (martial law)."
He further noted, "Expelling and disqualifying (former President Yoon) won't erase martial law and impeachment," adding, "It's a task we have to carry forward."
In his policy announcement that day, Hong stated he would form five promotion teams immediately upon the government's launch: the 'Sunjin advanced country constitutional amendment promotion team,' the 'national pension reform promotion team,' the 'medical reform promotion team,' the 'fair election reform promotion team,' and the 'U.S. trade negotiation promotion team,' with the Blue House acting as a control tower to directly tackle current issues.
