Kim Song-hee, a citizen who came to Seoul stating that she would protect the National Assembly during the 12·3 emergency martial law, has been appointed as the head of the campaign committee for presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party.
The candidate's camp announced in a press release on the 12th that Kim would take on the role of campaign head. According to the camp, Kim lost her brother to the military during the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and rushed to the National Assembly during last year's 12·3 emergency martial law, leaving her son with the words, "If you haven't heard from me by tomorrow morning, assume I'm dead," and continuously guarding the Lee & Ko.
Participating as operating committee members of the campaign are Maya, a singer known for the song "Azalea Flower"; composer Yoon Il-sang; former director of the National Gwacheon Science Museum Lee Jeong-mo; psychiatrist Kang Do-hyung; and film director Cho Jung-rae.
The campaign's auditor roles are taken up by college student Baek Da-eun, who participated in the Namtaeryeong protests, and attorney Kim Dae-sik.
The camp explained, "This reflects the determination of participants to break the tradition of having a public figure as the chairperson and to create a campaign led by the citizens who are the main characters in protecting Korea."
Yoon Ho-jung, the chairperson of the election committee, asked at the launch ceremony for the campaign held in Yeouido that morning, "I hope each one of you gathered here will become a 'first mover' leading not only to a victory in the primary but also an overwhelming victory in the 6·3 early presidential election."
