Amid the United States imposing a 25% reciprocal tariff on South Korean products, Deputy Minister Jeong In-kyo of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to visit the U.S. He is expected to negotiate a reduction in the reciprocal tariffs with the U.S.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 7th, Deputy Minister Jeong plans to visit Washington, D.C., on the 8th to 9th (local time) to meet with key U.S. government officials, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer.
Through this visit, Deputy Minister Jeong aims to understand the U.S. government's specific stance and future plans regarding tariff policy and to negotiate the reduction of the 25% reciprocal tariff imposed on South Korean products.
He plans to convey that the U.S. tariff measures could negatively impact the global trade environment as well as the trade and investment relations between South Korea and the United States. He also intends to discuss measures to minimize the negative effects on South Korean corporations with the U.S.
Deputy Minister Jeong noted, "With the reciprocal tariff measures announced on the 2nd and tariffs on specific items such as steel, aluminum, automobiles, and auto parts, significant difficulties are expected for exporters to the U.S. and our corporations' activities in the U.S."
He added, "We plan to focus all efforts on consultations with the U.S. to minimize the impacts of the U.S. tariff policy, including reciprocal tariffs, on our industry and corporations while continuing to communicate closely with the U.S. in various ways."
