Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged the Constitutional Court judges on the 30th, saying, 'How great must the burden be?' while calling for a judgment on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol. This is an effort to differentiate through 'appeasing the Constitutional Court' as political circles criticize the court for its political bias along party lines. As the impeachment trial judgment is pushed to next month, the pressure on individual judges is also intensifying.
On this day, Lee posted on social media, requesting, 'I ask that the court of the people and the judges of the people swiftly make wise decisions for all citizens.' He also referred to the demand for a quick ruling from the Constitutional Court as 'an expression of firm hope and desire that the most trusted constitutional institution will become the last bastion of democracy.'
He noted, 'As the final ruling on the presidential impeachment by the Constitutional Court is delayed, the public's anxiety is increasing, and unfortunately, the voices of distrust towards the Constitutional Court, which is the final guardian of the constitutional order of South Korea, are growing.' He added, 'I believe that the Constitutional Court judges are also spending sleepless nights, bearing a heavy burden as they deliberate on a crucial phase that will determine the fate of South Korea.'
He also said, 'How considerable must the effort have been to lead the impeachment case hearings, conducting 13 rounds of preparation sessions and hearings twice a week in a tight schedule for rapid resolution of national confusion?' Lee remarked, 'At this point, where a conclusion must be reached to determine the direction of South Korean history, the anguish and difficulties are likely to be even greater.'
Lee stated, 'While there must be valid reasons for the significant delays in the final ruling since the conclusion of the arguments, it is a reality that the citizens, who do not know these circumstances, cannot help but feel anxiety and doubt.' He emphasized, 'To minimize national confusion, swift judgment is essential.'
