Lee Jae-myung, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is facing the sentencing of his appeal for violating the Public Official Election Act, said on the 26th that the Constitutional Court, which has not yet set a date for the ruling on President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment trial, poses a 'threat to constitutional order.'
On this day, Lee held a Supreme Council meeting in front of the Democratic Party's tent office in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, and noted, 'The Constitutional Court continues to delay the ruling for reasons unknown. Whichever side, a conclusion must be reached quickly for the stability of state affairs.'
He further stated that he does not understand the 'April theory' regarding President Yoon's impeachment trial. Lee said, 'There are reports that the Constitutional Court's ruling could be postponed to April. What is so difficult? I cannot understand it at all. The public would feel the same way,' and added, 'Isn't it not such a complicated case?'
Lee emphasized, 'Hasn't (President Yoon) threatened the public with the power and forces entrusted to him by the citizens? How can one dream of a military regime and attempt a military coup in South Korea? This is an act that completely destroys constitutional order.'
He continued, 'The entire nation witnessed the proclamation of unconstitutional martial law, the declaration of a state of emergency that did not meet the conditions, and the entry of the military into the National Assembly. What more evidence is needed?'
Regarding the possibility of the Constitutional Court dismissing the impeachment trial, he strongly criticized that granting amnesty would be akin to issuing a 'license for martial law.'
Lee remarked, 'Are we saying that granting amnesty again to a president who has already been arrested and indicted on charges of insurrection allows him to carry out a military coup at any time?' and added, 'It is like giving a license for martial law.'
He stressed, 'The leadership of the country is collapsing, resulting in chaos and disorder itself, and the Constitutional Court's continuous delays in the ruling without any reason acceptable to the public is, in itself, a threat to constitutional order.'
