An additional case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed at a cattle farm in Muan County, Jeonnam.
According to the central response headquarters for foot-and-mouth disease on the 16th, the farm reported suspicious symptoms (salivation) to the quarantine authorities after the farm owner detected them following an emergency vaccination due to the outbreak in Yeongam County the previous day. As a result of detailed testing, three animals were confirmed to have foot-and-mouth disease.
The headquarters has expanded the area under the crisis alert 'serious level' to include Hampyeong County and Sinan County, adjacent to Muan County.
Emergency vaccinations will be conducted for pigs raised in the area.
This outbreak is the first to occur on a farm in Muan County, and according to the foot-and-mouth disease emergency action guidelines (SOP), there are plans to cull all livestock raised on the farm.
The headquarters emphasized that 'careful clinical observation by livestock farmers is an essential element for rapid reporting' to prevent further spread of foot-and-mouth disease, noting, 'If symptoms such as salivation or lack of appetite are detected, they should be reported promptly to the quarantine authorities.' It also urged that vaccinations for all raised ruminants be completed and that basic quarantine rules, including disinfection inside and outside of barns, be strictly followed.
