Kim Sang-wook, a member of the 'young faction' within the People Power Party, noted on the 12th at the Constitutional Court that if President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment trial is dismissed, he will resort to a hunger strike. The party leadership showed a cold reaction, saying it was 'inappropriate' and that they had 'no interest' in his remarks.
On that day, Kim predicted on CBS radio that the impeachment trial of President Yoon would result in an 'acceptance' ruling. He stated, 'I thought about whether I could write a dismissal ruling as a legal expert, but no matter how hard I try to think of it, I can't write a dismissal ruling. I can't even write a rejection. It only seems that an acceptance ruling will come out.'
He continued, 'If there are judges with normal legal competency, it is natural that the acceptance ruling will pass unanimously by 8 to 0,' adding, 'That is also the necessary outcome to save this society.'
He expressed, 'If there is even a slight chance that the dismissal of President Yoon's impeachment occurs, I will enter a hunger strike in the National Assembly until I die.' This seems to underscore his belief that the acceptance of impeachment is inevitable. Kim has shown opposition to the party's stance by casting votes in favor of the impeachment motion against President Yoon.
The leadership's response was chilly. Kwon Young-se, the head of the emergency measures committee, met with reporters after visiting the Capital Defense Command and pointed out regarding Kim's position, 'It is very regretful and unfortunate. Engaging in activities that go against what most party members agree upon is inappropriate behavior for someone affiliated with the party, especially as a member.'
Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader, said, 'I have given up on Kim's remarks and actions. I have no interest in them,' adding, 'I will not comment.'
