The Air Force announced on the 11th that it has dismissed the commanders of the unit to which the pilots belong in relation to the fighter jet accidental bombing incident.
In a text notice on the afternoon of the same day, the Air Force reported, "The unit commander (colonel) and battalion commander (lieutenant colonel) of the respective unit were dismissed for violations of the obligation to comply with laws during the investigation of the fighter jet accidental bombing incident." The reasons cited were serious dereliction of duty and inadequate command and supervision.
The Air Force indicated the previous day (10th) that the unit commander did not carry out overall command and management duties, while the battalion commander emphasized only general safety matters, lacking detailed command and supervision. The Air Force also announced it would conduct qualification reviews for the two KF-16 pilots around next week.
On the 6th, during live-fire training of the Air Force KF-16 fighter jet at the Pocheon promotion training area in Gyeonggi Province, an incident occurred where a bomb was dropped on civilian property. The cause has been identified as an error in the pilot's input of target coordinates.
The Ministry of National Defense stated the previous day that it would initiate investigations and inquiries into the pilots and related responsible parties by deploying personnel from the investigation headquarters.
