The Democratic Party of Korea decided to hold an urgent closed-door leadership meeting after the court on the 7th accepted President Yoon Suk-yeol's request for cancellation of his detention. An urgent general meeting of lawmakers will follow at 3:30 p.m.
Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung met with reporters in the National Assembly's 의원회관 after the announcement of the cancellation of President Yoon Suk-yeol's detention on the 7th. He said, "We urgently convened the Supreme Committee because the exact situation has not been clarified," adding, "We will gather opinions and then make a statement."
The Democratic Party plans to hold an urgent general meeting of lawmakers involving all members after the Supreme Committee meeting. The party notified lawmakers that "in light of the urgent situation," the general meeting would take place today (7th) at 3:30 p.m. and requested their attendance.
On this day, the court issued a "cancellation of detention" decision for President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was indicted for the charge of being the 'ringleader of rebellion.' Once the detention is canceled, any existing detention warrants will lose their effect. The decision to cancel the detention is made when there were originally no grounds for detention or when such grounds have disappeared after detention.
The prosecution can immediately appeal the court's decision to cancel the detention of President Yoon. His release will take effect after the cancellation of detention is finalized. If the cancellation is confirmed, President Yoon can attend both the Constitutional Court's impeachment trial and the criminal trial at the court without detention.
