Members of the National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee from the People Power Party said on the 4th that Minister Choi Sang-mok, also acting president, should not appoint Ma Eun-hyuk as a candidate for Constitutional Court Justice, calling him "a person recommended unilaterally by the Democratic Party." They expressed "deep sympathy" for Park Soo-young, a committee member from the ruling party who is on a hunger strike opposing Ma's appointment.
The People Power Party's committee members stated at a National Assembly press conference that "Ma Eun-hyuk is a candidate unilaterally recommended by the Democratic Party, which has an absolute majority of seats, not through an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties," adding that "forcing the appointment of Ma Eun-hyuk breaks long-standing traditions and customs of the National Assembly."
They described Ma as "someone who denies the Republic of Korea," stating that "during his time as a judge, he made an outrageous dismissal decision regarding the Minju Party's aides who illegally occupied the National Assembly and is also a founding member of the People's Liberation Federation, which claims the Korean War was initiated by the South." They also mentioned that Choi, as acting president, should collect opinions from the Ministry of Justice and wait for the ruling on Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's impeachment.
The Democratic Party holds the position that Acting President Choi should immediately appoint Ma as a candidate. Park Chan-dae, the Democratic Party's floor leader, said, "It has been six days since the Constitutional Court ruled that not appointing Ma Eun-hyuk as a Constitutional Court Justice is unconstitutional, yet Acting President Choi has not made the appointment," and added that "even a grade 9 public official cannot get away with this kind of behavior without facing severe penalties."
