On the 27th, People Power Party Chairperson Kwon Young-se noted, “Since President Yoon Suk-yeol has expressed his willingness to sacrifice himself until the end of his term, we must take this opportunity to achieve a constitutional amendment that includes a restructuring of power.”
During a press conference held that morning at the National Assembly, Commissioner Kwon said, “Even if we leave the evaluation of the legitimacy of the state of emergency to the Constitutional Court and the courts, it is necessary to reflect on the reality of our politics that led to such a situation together with the people.”
He continued, “When the era of authoritarianism ended and the sixth republic constitution was created in 1987, the most important task was to check the powers of the president,” adding, “As a result, no one anticipated the possibility of legislative tyranny in the National Assembly, and the National Assembly has become an omnipotent entity that no one can check.”
Chairperson Kwon remarked, “Who could have imagined at that time the emergence of a massive opposition party engaging in unconstitutional one-man tyranny without any responsibility?” and noted, “The consequences are wholly falling back on the people.”
He welcomed the initiative from a group of former National Assembly speakers, former prime ministers, and party leaders called “Elders Concerned for the Nation,” which announced it would launch a nationwide campaign to solicit signatures for constitutional amendments, and added, “Our party will actively support the president's sincerity towards constitutional amendment.”
Furthermore, regarding the launch of the party's special committee for constitutional amendments that day, he stated, “Our goal is to design the future of the Republic of Korea,” and emphasized, “We will listen to the voices of the people and prepare a constitutional amendment proposal that meets the demands of the times.”
