On the 25th, senior members of the People Power Party urged the Constitutional Court to dismiss the impeachment trial final arguments of President Yoon Suk-yeol. The inevitability of declaring martial law on December 3 has been confirmed, and since President Yoon indicated that he would promote a 'reform of shortening the term' upon resuming his duties, it appears they are pressuring the Constitutional Court, arguing that impeachment should be inappropriate for the sake of national unity.
On that day, Representative Kim Ki-hyun, who attended President Yoon's final argument at the Constitutional Court, said through Facebook, "Watching the president calmly read the prepared speech to the people, I feel it is a candid and dignified reflection." He added, "It was also easy to imagine how much the president's anguish was until the 'martial law' was declared."
He continued, "Now only the Constitutional Court's judgment remains. I believe it will wisely determine what can save the Republic of Korea." He emphasized, "From the outset, the rushed impeachment conducted for strategic purposes must be dismissed by the Constitutional Court."
Representative Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party also evaluated it through Facebook as "the final statement conveying the president's sincerity."
He claimed, "Many citizens have come to recognize the serious reality of South Korea through a detailed explanation of the emergency situation that forced the president to make the decision for martial law," and asserted, "It has now become clear that the president cannot be dismissed for declaring martial law."
He added, "A promise for constitutional amendments for political reforms that do not cling to terms must be concluded with actions to prevent the large opposition party's legislative malpractice, further mature democracy, and create a sustainable Republic of Korea."
Earlier, President Yoon stated in his final remarks at the Constitutional Court that "the purpose of declaring a state of emergency was for public appeal," and reiterated his stance that "the declaration of a state of emergency was made with a desperate heart to prevent the paralysis of state governance and the collapse of our constitutional order of democracy and to normalize state functions."
He also clarified the direction of governance if the impeachment is dismissed, particularly emphasizing that he would push for political reforms such as 'constitutional amendments to shorten terms.' President Yoon said, "If I return to my duties, I intend to focus the latter part of my term on the promotion of constitutional amendments and political reforms to pass a proper country to future generations," and noted, "I plan to transfer substantial authority on domestic issues to the Prime Minister while concentrating on foreign relations."
He stated, "I believe that if constitutional amendments and political reforms are properly pursued, the divided and fractured citizens will come together in that process."
