Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, said on the 23rd that even if Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, is elected president while being on trial for violating the Public Official Election Act, it is "common sense" to continue the trial.
Kweon noted this during a press conference related to current issues held at the National Assembly that afternoon, regarding the case of violation of the Public Official Election Act that could lead to the loss of Lee's eligibility to run for office.
This was a complete rebuttal to Lee's claim made during the MBC 100-Minute Debate on the 19th that "if elected president, the trial will be suspended, according to the majority view."
Additionally, Kweon emphasized, "The 'warrant shopping' of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials has been revealed as a fact" and said, "CIO chief Oh Dong-woon must resign immediately."
Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol's side raised the suspicion of 'warrant shopping' after the CIO applied for a search and communication warrant against President Yoon at the Seoul Central District Court and was rejected, then subsequently transferred to the Seoul Western District Court, where a warrant for arrest was requested.
Furthermore, regarding Lee's proposal for an "inheritance tax public debate," he stated, "I will substitute it with a statement from the party's deputy spokesperson" and added, "It is not even worth my time to directly answer the rude public inquiry from a representative whose life itself is a fraud crime."
Earlier, People Power Party deputy spokesperson Lee Jong-bae noted, "Our country's highest inheritance tax rate, including management premiums, is 60%, which is higher than any developed country" and posed the question, "If I pass my company to my son, only 40% remains. Can corporations survive and jobs be created in such a country?"
Kweon commented on the Democratic Party's demand for a supplementary budget of 35 trillion won by stating, "The act of preparing a supplementary budget itself, the scale of it, and the issues of how much budget to allocate to which parts cannot be created so easily as the Democratic Party does overnight like a snap of the fingers."
He also explained, "We must watch the execution process of the already allocated budget for this year and examine which parts are insufficient and where to allocate budget to ensure 100% execution and revitalization of the economy, which requires considerable time for review."
