The Democratic Party of Korea will introduce the 'Myung Tae-kyun Special Counsel Law' to clarify allegations of intervention in the candidate selection by President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife. The reason for the proposal is that investigations into public manipulation and election interference surrounding political broker Myung Tae-kyun have been sluggish.
Park Sung-jun, the Democratic Party's floor leader, met with reporters after a high-level strategy meeting held at the National Assembly on 10th and said, "We have been preparing the Myung Tae-kyun Special Counsel Law since last week, and we plan to introduce it tomorrow (11th) afternoon."
Park, the floor leader, stated, "In the recording related to Myung Tae-kyun, President Yoon and Myung Tae-kyun actually heard the voices related to the candidate selection of Kim Young-sun, and it has become apparent that this constitutes intervention in the candidate selection," adding, "The investigation by the prosecution was conducted up until the report was prepared, but it has not progressed since then."
The scope of the investigation under the Myung Tae-kyun Special Counsel Law includes allegations of ▲ public manipulation ▲ election interference ▲ fraud in elections. The Democratic Party identifies President Yoon and Kim Keon-hee, along with relevant politicians, as the targets of the investigation. The method for recommending the special counsel is likely to be a third-party recommendation by the Chief Justice.
Initially, the allegations related to Myung were included in the 'Kim Keon-hee Special Counsel Law' proposed by the Democratic Party. However, according to the Democratic Party, many major members of the ruling party from Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, including Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, are alleged to be connected to Myung. If the Myung Tae-kyun Special Counsel is activated, numerous candidates from the ruling party may come under investigation.
Kim Yong-min, the Democratic Party's floor leader, remarked, "Before civil unrest occurs, the core of the political situation is precisely the Myung Tae-kyun Gate," and emphasized, "We need to quickly and thoroughly investigate the Myung Tae-kyun-related gate to uncover the truth and punish those responsible."
He added, "Despite our demands for thorough investigations by the Changwon District Prosecutor's Office, there are reports that suggest an intention to delete Myung Tae-kyun's 'golden phone,' indicating that the investigations are sluggish and there seems to be no will at all," further stating, "The goal is to process the Myung Tae-kyun Special Counsel Law within this month."
