Choi Sang-mok, acting President and Minister of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, reviewed response measures to the announcement of tariffs (25%) on steel and aluminum by U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Acting Minister Choi discussed the response direction regarding President Trump's mention of tariff imposition, developments in the U.S.-Japan summit, and key trade issues in the digital sector during the 'Meeting on External Economic Issues' held at the Government Complex Seoul in Jongno District, Seoul, on the morning of 10th.
Those present at the meeting included Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Tae-yul, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-geun, Director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination Bang Ki-sun, Policy Chief of the Office of the President Sung Tae-yoon, National Security Office Chief Shin Won-sik, First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Trade Park Sung-taek, and Chief Negotiator for Trade Agreements Jeong In-gyo.
According to major foreign media, President Trump remarked to reporters aboard his private jet heading to New Orleans for the Super Bowl, the U.S. football championship game, 'Any steel coming into the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff,' adding, 'Aluminum will also be the same.'
The tariff measures are expected to be announced on the 12th to 13th. The measures are anticipated to take effect immediately.
