The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on the 12th that it will conduct special inspections on seafood origin labeling until the 27th ahead of the Lunar New Year.
Key inspection items include seafood for ancestral rites such as pollock, yellow corvina, abalone, and red snapper, as well as live sea bream, live yellowtail, and live red king crab, which have had a high number of false origin labeling cases or are suspected of violations.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to verify the status of origin labeling not only at traditional markets and supermarkets that handle these seafood items but also at highway rest areas.
Businesses that falsely label the origin will face up to seven years in prison or fines of up to 100 million won. In cases where the origin is not labeled, a fine of up to 10 million won will be imposed.
