The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport noted on the 3rd that the investigation into the Jeju Air accident at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla is currently at stage 4 out of 12.
According to the status report from the accident investigation committee, the accident investigation is divided into 12 stages in accordance with international standards and domestic laws. Currently, a field investigation is underway to collect relevant information and materials that form the basis of the stage 4 accident investigation.
A representative of the Ministry noted, “The wreckage and data analysis, testing, drafting of the preliminary report, public hearings, gathering opinions from related countries, and committee deliberations will follow, leading to the final announcement of the investigation results.
An official from the committee explained, “After the accident, authorities in the United States, the country responsible for the design and manufacture of the aircraft model, were notified in accordance with international agreements. A joint Korea-U.S. accident investigation team was formed from Oct. 31 to verify the wreckage and organize specialized groups by field, including operations, maintenance, and landing gear.”
The committee noted, “We have completed the air traffic controller interviews and drone footage of the accident scene, and the collected cockpit voice recorder (CVR) data is being retrieved for transcript creation.”
A committee representative emphasized, “The committee is an independent organization established under the aviation and railway accident investigation laws to accurately determine the cause of the accident through a fair and transparent investigation, ensuring there are no suspicions left for the bereaved families and the public.”
