Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who also serves as the Minister of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, urged all efforts to be made to manage the aftermath of the aircraft crash in Muan on the 29th and to support the bereaved families.
Acting President Choi arrived at the accident site at Muan Airport around 12:55 p.m. that day and directed, while noting, "No words of comfort will suffice for the bereaved families who have experienced this tragedy." Choi emphasized, "Mobilize all emergency medical systems, equipment, personnel, and infrastructure to prioritize saving lives, even if it is just one more."
In continuation, Choi said, "The entire government is working closely together, putting all resources into the accident recovery with utmost effort," and added, "We will do our best to ensure there is no inadequacy in supporting the bereaved families."
Meanwhile, a Jeju Air flight 7C2216, departing from Bangkok, Thailand, veered off the runway while landing at Muan Airport, crashing into the airport's outer wall, splitting in half, and resulting in a fire.
Onboard the aircraft were a total of 181 people, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members. Among the passengers, 173 were Korean nationals, and 2 were Thai nationals. As of 12:49 p.m. that day, the National Fire Agency announced that 85 people had died and 2 were rescued.
