Choi Sang-mok, acting president and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, instructed relevant ministries to make all-out efforts for personnel rescue related to the aircraft accident at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla.
Acting President Choi arrived at the Central Disaster Management Headquarters around 9:50 a.m. on the 29th and urged, “The acting Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety, Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Fire Commissioner, Korean National Police Agency, and other relevant agencies should mobilize all available equipment and personnel to make every effort in personnel rescue and ensure there are no safety accidents involving firefighters and others during the rescue process.”
It was reported that Acting President Choi was immediately on the way to Muan International Airport in South Jeolla, where the accident occurred, right after the meeting.
Around 9:07 a.m. that day, an aircraft landing at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla veered off the runway and collided with a fence wall, causing a fire. The aircraft involved in the accident was Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, arriving in Muan from Bangkok, Thailand, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, totaling 181 people, and resulted in numerous casualties.
