LG CNS said on the 2nd that it built a 30-megawatt (MW) hyperscale AI data center in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is the first case of a domestic corporations directly building an overseas client's AI data center on site. LG CNS also secured clients corresponding to the full capacity before the data center's completion.

The project was ordered by KMG, a joint venture between Sinar Mas Group in Indonesia and Korea Investment Real Asset Management, last year. LG CNS carried out the project based on its data center design, build, and operate (DBO) capabilities accumulated in Korea.

The data center is equipped with power and cooling infrastructure for operating high-performance AI servers. LG CNS designed a hybrid cooling architecture that combines air cooling and liquid cooling. The first phase adopted an air-cooling system, and subsequent phases will add a liquid-cooling system to control the heat generated by high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs).

It also built a system capable of supplying more than 300 kilowatts (kW) per rack. This is about 60 times that of a typical data center rack, enabling stable power supply even to high-density AI servers loaded with multiple GPUs. The power infrastructure was dualized so that backup power can be used even if the main power supply is interrupted.

The project also applied the "One LG" integrated solution that combines technologies from LG Group affiliates. Centered on LG CNS's data center build capabilities, it integrated power, cooling, and energy infrastructure by using LG Electronics' HVAC systems and LG Energy Solution's batteries.

LG CNS is currently conducting design work for subsequent phase construction. When the follow-up project is completed, the data center's total receiving capacity is expected to expand to 400 MW.

LG CNS plans to use this project as a springboard to expand its AI data center business in the Asia-Pacific region, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan.

Hyun Shin-Gyoon, president of LG CNS, said, "The completion of the Indonesia AI data center establishes a meaningful achievement that provides overseas clients with data center capabilities accumulated in Korea and proves business competitiveness in the global market," adding, "We will use this as a bridgehead to expand AI data center and AI factory businesses in the global market, including the Asia-Pacific region."
