An analysis found that the value of computing-capacity contracts Anthropic has signed over the past 11 months totals $517 billion (about 700 trillion won).
On the 6th (local time), U.S. IT outlet The Information reported that, based on a compilation of company announcements and other materials, Anthropic, in addition to the 1–2 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity it had secured before last October, signed additional contracts totaling at least 14.8 GW over the subsequent 11 months.
The contract value far exceeds the $180 billion (about 243 trillion won) in server lease expense through 2029 that Anthropic presented to investors last December. Anthropic has not disclosed its total computing capacity or related expenditure.
Ahead of what is expected to be one of the largest initial public offerings, investors are watching Anthropic's ability to secure computing resources and its expense burden.
Anthropic's annualized revenue stood at $65 billion (about 8.78 trillion won) as of July, surpassing OpenAI's $40 billion (about 5.4 trillion won). However, in the race to secure computing, it still trails OpenAI, which plans to secure 30 GW by 2030 and invest up to $750 billion (about 1,013 trillion won). That is why Anthropic has made securing computing resources its top priority over the past year.
The largest portion of the contracts Anthropic has signed over the past 11 months is the total 11 GW it agreed with early investors Amazon and Google. The contract term is the next 10 years, and the total value is estimated to exceed $300 billion (about 405 trillion won).
In November last year, Anthropic also signed a $30 billion (about 40.5 trillion won) deal to lease 1 GW of Microsoft (MS) Azure servers. In May this year, it signed a contract worth up to $45 billion (about 60.8 trillion won) with SpaceX to pay $1.25 billion (about 1.7 trillion won) per month through 2029. Last month, it signed an $80 billion (about 108 trillion won) deal with cloud startups Lambda and nScale to supply 460 megawatts (MW) of computing capacity over six years.
Anthropic also plans to invest $50 billion (about 67.6 trillion won) with cloud startup FluidStack to build its own data centers in Texas and New York. It has also signed purchase agreements for Broadcom's Google tensor processing units (TPUs) and AMD chips to be used in these data centers.
