The Presidential Committee on AI said that new standing Vice Chairperson Ha Jung-woo officially took office on the 31st. The committee is the control tower for national artificial intelligence (AI) policy, chaired by President Lee Jae-myung.
At the inauguration, Vice Chairperson Ha emphasized that for the Republic of Korea to lead global AI competition, the government and the private sector must unite their capabilities. The judgment is that responses at the level of individual ministries or corporations alone make it difficult to cope with the industry and civilizational transition centered on AI. Accordingly, the committee envisions designing a national-level AI vision and serving as a hub that consolidates government policy with private-sector innovation.
For its operating direction, the committee proposed concentrating capabilities to enter the world's top three in AI, driving AI transition across industry, the public sector, and daily life, and realizing "Everyone's AI" so all people can benefit from the technology.
As core tasks, it will push the "Korea Big Leap Three Mega Projects" centered on semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers. The plan is to strengthen pan-government policy coordination and public-private cooperation to create an ecosystem in which semiconductor and AI infrastructure and the manufacturing and robotics industries are tightly connected. Institutional support will also be expanded so that private investment leads to industrial growth and job creation.
The scope of AI use will also expand. Beyond industry and research, AI will be applied to education, health care, administration, and public services to deliver changes that people can feel. It will also promote a "Korean-style AI industrial revolution" by linking regional industrial bases and talent to the three mega projects so the greater Seoul area and non-capital regions grow together.
Vice Chairperson Ha said the committee will speed up policy decisions, mediate interests among ministries, and remove regulations and institutional obstacles raised in the field. It will also strengthen policy inclusiveness so that opportunities to use AI do not differ by the size of corporations, place of residence, generation, or income level.
The committee will also expand its execution capacity and monitoring function. It will continuously manage progress so that the national AI action plan and the three mega projects do not remain declarations but connect to actual projects, investment, and industrial growth. "What matters more than strategy development is execution and results," Vice Chairperson Ha said, adding that he would responsibly push the tasks so the Republic of Korea establishes itself as a model country in the global AI transition.
