Lyu Jae-cheol, LG Electronics chief executive officer (CEO and president), has begun recruiting research and development (R&D) talent in the United States to lead future growth businesses, including artificial intelligence (AI) and Robotics, AI data center cooling solutions, and mobility.
LG Electronics said on the 31st that it held a "North America Tech Conference" on the 29th local time in San Francisco for outstanding overseas talent. It is a recruitment-linked event that invites local R&D professionals and Ph.D.-level experts to introduce LG Electronics' future businesses and technologies.
About 100 people attended the event, including Ph.D.s and researchers from major U.S. universities and research institutions such as Stanford, Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), as well as local Big Tech and startup R&D professionals.
From LG Electronics, attendees included Lyu, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Kim Byung-hoon, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHO) Song Sang-ho, HS Platform Business Center head Jeong Ki-hyun, ES Research Institute head Oh Se-gi, VS Research Institute head Lee Sang-yong, AI Research Institute head Kim Young-jun, Software Center head Kim Dong-uk, Robotics Business Center head Song Si-yong, LG Data Factory head Park Ki-beom, and Robot Advanced Research Institute head Baek Seung-min.
Lyu, who majored in mechanical engineering and joined the company as an engineer before serving as business unit head and business division head and becoming CEO, highlighted the importance of securing technical talent as he introduced his own career. He said, "LG Electronics is a company where people with technical expertise can grow into key leaders who drive the company's future."
Lyu also outlined business strategies to accelerate future growth centered on commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), mobility, and physical AI, in addition to existing core businesses such as home appliances, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs, and telematics.
LG Electronics is nurturing its Robotics business, which combines robot platforms, robot intelligence, and data capabilities, along with AI data center cooling solutions and a mobility business that builds an in-vehicle intelligence platform based on AIDV and SDV, as key pillars of future growth powered by physical AI.
Through its appliance and vehicle components businesses, LG Electronics sees as strengths for its physical AI business the manufacturing and production data and know-how accumulated over decades and its understanding of the home space and customers based on hundreds of millions of products worldwide. It also plans to leverage HVAC and vehicle components technologies and its capability to manufacture more than 1 billion key parts cumulatively.
It plans to expand the related business ecosystem by adding strategic partnerships with global Big Tech to collaboration among Robotics subsidiaries and group affiliates. Lyu said, "We discussed future technologies here, including AI, Robotics, and mobility, but ultimately it is talent that changes the future," adding, "LG Electronics will work with people who are not afraid of bigger challenges to create meaningful change in the world."
Starting on the 9th of next month, LG Electronics will visit major North American universities in sequence, including MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Michigan, Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, to hold recruitment briefings. In Korea, since last month it has been hiring new employees for the second half in fields such as robotics, production technology, and electrical and electronics.
