Of the 87 indoor facilities and subway locations that received an "insufficient" rating in last year's telecom service quality assessment, eight received the same rating again this year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and National Information Society Agency (NIA) said on the 30th that they conducted a reinspection of 87 locations that had slow transmission speeds or weak radio signal strength in last year's telecom service quality assessment.
This inspection focused on areas and facilities with subpar quality inside buildings and on subways. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to conduct inspections of weak-quality sections on high-speed rail at the end of this year.
As a result, all 30 indoor facilities that received an insufficient rating last year saw quality improvements this year. The average download transmission speed improved from 33.61Mbps to 99.34Mbps.
In the subway telecom quality check, for 5th-generation mobile communication (5G), 12 of the 13 sections that were rated insufficient last year improved, but one section still did not improve. The average 5G download transmission speed increased from 354.34Mbps before improvements to 661.54Mbps after improvements.
For 4th-generation mobile communication (LTE), 37 of 44 insufficient sections improved, while seven remained insufficient. The average LTE download transmission speed improved from 52.84Mbps to 118.98Mbps.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the three mobile carriers plan to complete improvement work before the Chuseok holiday on key, high-traffic sections of the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed rail lines, where many insufficient sections appeared in last year's quality assessment. After that, during the second half, they plan to install Shared Network 2.0 facilities on the remaining sections.
