President Lee Jae-myung has tapped lawmaker Lee Hae-min of the Rebuilding Korea Party as "senior secretary for AI future planning," who will oversee the national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. A former Google engineer who has led the legislation of the Basic AI Act in the National Assembly, Lee will take charge of coordinating the government's AI policy.
Kang Hoon-sik, presidential chief of staff, held a briefing at the Chunchugwan press center at the Blue House on the 30th and said Lee was appointed senior secretary for AI future planning.
Kang said, "As a next-generation politician and former Google engineer, Lee has led the way for the direction of Korea's AI by sponsoring the Basic AI Act," adding, "He is the right person to serve as the control tower that will link the national AI strategy to industrial innovation and service changes people can feel, and bring together the capabilities of the Ministry of Justice into one."
Born in 1973, Lee graduated from Sogang University's Department of Electronic Computing and earned a master's degree in computer engineering from the same school.
Lee built a long career in the information technology (IT) industry. He worked at Google as a senior product manager and served as chief product officer (CPO) at the data company OpenSurvey, among other roles.
He entered politics in 2024 and was elected to the 22nd National Assembly. He served as chairperson of the Rebuilding Korea Party's special committee on AI and as secretary-general, and in the National Assembly he led AI-related legislation and policy discussions, including sponsoring the Basic AI Act.
Lee will succeed former senior secretary Ha Jung-woo and take overall charge of the government's AI policy. Ha stepped down to run in the by-election for the Busan Buk-gu Gap National Assembly seat held alongside the June 3 local elections on Apr. 6.
