China's memory chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has moved to commercialize LPDDR6, the next-generation mobile DRAM. By deciding to supply its products for the first time to a Xiaomi foldable smartphone set to launch next month, it is set to make a full-fledged push into the next-generation DRAM market long led by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
On the 29th, CXMT said on its social media (SNS) Weibo account, "CXMT's LPDDR6 memory has entered full-scale mass production," adding, "It will be installed for the first time in Xiaomi's '18 Fold,' a new foldable phone. See you in September when the new product launches."
Lei Jun, Xiaomi's chief executive officer (CEO), also wrote on Weibo, "Congratulations on CXMT's LPDDR6 mass production. Very impressive," and added, "Xiaomi's latest AI processor, Xuanjie O3, will be the first to support CXMT's LPDDR6, and it will debut in the Xiaomi 18 Fold."
He continued, "This is only the beginning, and I believe more outstanding Chinese science and technology companies will unite and reach the top."
LPDDR is a DRAM standard used in mobile products such as smartphones and tablets, operating at low voltage to minimize power consumption.
In a recent semiannual report, CXMT said its LPDDR6 reaches a top speed of 12,800 Mbps with a maximum capacity of 16 Gb (gigabit). It added, "We have already sent samples to key customers for verification and are accelerating toward mass production."
The company expects LPDDR6 to be widely used in areas such as mobile devices, servers, and smart vehicles.
Meanwhile, competition for leadership in LPDDR6 is intensifying in the global DRAM industry. SK hynix said in March that it had succeeded in developing a 16 Gb LPDDR6 DRAM using a 6th-generation (1c) 10-nanometer-class (nanometer is one-billionth of a meter) process, adding that it would complete mass production preparations in the first half and begin supplying products in the second half.
Earlier, Chinese outlets including Jiemian reported that SK hynix aimed to preempt the next-generation memory market by prioritizing LPDDR6 supplies to Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi to curb CXMT's growth. But Xiaomi's partnership with CXMT has shifted the competitive landscape.
Samsung Electronics showcased LPDDR6 products at CES 2026, an information technology (IT) trade show, in January, but has not disclosed the exact timing for mass production, according to reports.
China's Securities Times assessed CXMT's mass production as "the world's first commercialization of an LPDDR6 product." It also said, "Amid the explosive trend in artificial intelligence (AI) demand, LPDDR6 is regarded as a key pillar of On-device AI computing power," adding that its use could extend beyond smartphones and personal computers (PCs) to AI data centers.
