SpaceX Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk acknowledged in the first all-hands meeting since acquiring Cursor that the artificial intelligence (AI) model Grok is behind competitors.
On the 25th local time, according to The Information and other foreign media, CEO Musk acknowledged in a video conference attended by more than 1,000 employees that "SpaceXAI's Grok is behind competitors." He added, "I am not used to losing," and urged employees to catch up with competitors.
Musk was concerned that, unlike Tesla and SpaceX, which hold strong positions in the electric vehicle and space industries respectively, Grok is not a leader in the AI market. Musk acquired Cursor last month to boost Grok's coding capabilities,
CEO Musk pointed to Anthropic as the current front-runner in the AI market. In the meeting, he said Anthropic is currently ahead in the AI race and assessed it as a strong competitor.
Musk also reportedly explained why AI technology development needs to be accelerated. He said, "I see it as inevitable that AI models will one day advance to a point where humans will find them difficult to control," and told employees, "That is why we must secure that level of technology before other corporations." He also tasked the newly joined Cursor employees with helping speed up SpaceX's AI development.
He expressed confidence about computing infrastructure. Musk said SpaceX will continue to secure more computing capacity than any other company in the AI race. That means deploying not only talent but also massive compute infrastructure such as AI chips and data centers at the same time to boost AI model competitiveness.
