Samsung Display said on the 26th that it will supply two types of in-vehicle organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for the recently unveiled ultra-large flagship electrified sport utility vehicle (SUV) GV90 from the premium brand Genesis of Hyundai Motor.
The products Samsung Display will supply are 24.6-inch and 13.2-inch OLEDs. Full-scale shipments begin this month, and they will be installed in the GV90, which is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of this year.
The GV90's center fascia features a variable "cinematic display" with a 24.6-inch OLED. While driving, it shows driving information, navigation, and media content on a 23.6-inch wide screen.
When the vehicle is parked and the expansion button between the driver's and front passenger's seats is pressed, the display rises 90 mm and the screen expands. At that point, users can view video and other content on a 24.6-inch large screen that is about 1.7 times wider than during driving.
Samsung Display explained that OLEDs are thinner and lighter than liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which use separate backlights, allowing better use of interior space. The pop-up OLED display applied to the GV90 is about 30% thinner and about 70% lighter than an LCD.
Executive Vice President Lee Ju-hyung, head of the small and medium display business at Samsung Display, said, "The Samsung OLED applied to the GV90 is a symbolic example where premium display and luxury mobility meet to deliver a new experience."
