The SQD-Mini LED TV from China's TCL received perfect scores in four categories—brightness, color reproduction, and motion clarity—in a picture quality comparison by market researcher Omdia.
TCL said on the 25th that SQD-Mini LED scored a perfect 10 in four categories in Omdia's technical evaluation: brightness, color consistency, color gamut, and 4K motion clarity.
Mini LED TVs pack smaller light-emitting diodes (LEDs) more densely behind a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to use as a backlight. The method finely controls light by screen zone to boost brightness and contrast ratio. TCL applied its own SQD technology to this.
Color gamut refers to the range of colors a display can reproduce. 4K motion clarity evaluates how clearly fast-moving images are rendered on a high-resolution screen.
It also earned high marks in local-dimming contrast and MEMC. Local dimming is a technology that adjusts backlight brightness by screen zone to increase contrast ratio, and MEMC (motion estimation and motion compensation) analyzes movement in video to create intermediate frames for smoother fast motion. The SQD-Mini LED model also maintained a consistent color gamut in Omdia's evaluation even when the screen area occupied by color varied from 100% to 1%.
TCL is improving panel and materials, backlight, and picture processing technologies to enhance the picture quality performance of Mini LED TVs. Centered on SQD-Mini LED, it is expanding its premium TV lineup, while in Korea it also sells home appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
A TCL official said, "Through this Omdia evaluation, we were able to confirm the picture quality competitiveness of SQD-Mini LED," and added, "We will continue to advance display technology to improve the viewing experience."
