Samsung Electronics is accelerating the artificial intelligence transition (AX) of its semiconductor business by successively bringing in AI experts. It will develop AI models specialized for semiconductor research and development (R&D) and build a system that allows AI to immediately use data generated during design, process, and manufacturing.
According to the industry on the 14th, the Samsung Electronics Device Solutions (DS, semiconductors) institutional sector hired Han Bo-hyung, a Seoul National University professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an expert in Deep Learning and vision AI, as a fellow, and brought in Executive Director Han Tae-rin, an expert in data engineering.
Fellow Han will lead the development of AI models specialized for Samsung Electronics' semiconductor R&D. Vision AI is a technology that learns image and video data to recognize and analyze objects or patterns. Samsung Electronics plans to use this for analyzing data generated in semiconductor design and processes to improve development efficiency and productivity.
Fellow Han earned bachelor's and master's degrees in computer engineering at Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Maryland in the United States. After serving as an assistant and associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at POSTECH, Han has been a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University since 2018. While maintaining the professorship at Seoul National University, Han will concurrently serve as a fellow at the Samsung Electronics DS institutional sector.
Executive Director Han will be responsible for building an "AI Ready Data" foundation that organizes data so AI can immediately use it for learning and analysis. The role is to standardize data generated during semiconductor design, process, and manufacturing and to establish a quality management system to increase AI utilization.
Executive Director Han graduated from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering from MIT in the United States. Han worked at Meta for about nine years as a senior engineering manager, among other roles, and later worked as a senior developer at Persona in the United States.
Samsung Electronics plans to expand AI adoption across core tasks such as semiconductor design, process development, and manufacturing, taking the recruitment of the two experts as an opportunity. It also plans to continue securing talent in AI and data and to spread related expertise across the entire DS institutional sector organization.
SK hynix also recently established a "Global Growth Task Force (TF)" to expand its global business and discover new growth opportunities, appointing Yoon Poong-young, president of the SK SUPEX Council, as head of the TF. Yoon will concurrently serve as TF head while maintaining the presidency of the SUPEX Council.
Yoon went through SK Inc. C&C and SK Telecom, and served as chief investment officer (CIO) of SK Square and president of SK AX. At SK hynix, Yoon will coordinate collaboration among affiliates and take on the role of discovering new business opportunities with global big tech.
