Samsung SDS said on the 11th that it was selected as a graphics processing unit (GPU) resource supplier for the government's "2026 AI research computing support project" and began services on the 20th of last month.
The project is a national AI research support program that provides artificial intelligence (AI) research GPU resources to researchers in Korea's academia and research institutes, overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).
The goal is to supply computing resources so that research institutions, such as universities and Government-funded research institute, which find it difficult to secure large-scale computing infrastructure on their own, can conduct research on hyper-scale AI models and large language models (LLMs).
The project is worth about 15.3 billion won. The service period runs from July this year to March next year.
Samsung SDS was selected as a ranked supplier through a competitive bidding process that comprehensively reviewed its GPU supply plan and resource scale, research environment level, operational support system, and security capabilities.
For this project, Samsung SDS will provide GPU clusters ranging from Nvidia's H100 (Hopper) GPUs to the latest B300 (Blackwell Ultra)-based GPUs. It will also support large-scale clustering that groups many GPUs into a single resource pool and a high-speed interconnect network, building an environment that allows researchers to respond flexibly to everything from long-term large projects to short-term experimental projects.
Earlier, Samsung SDS, for the first time in Korea, introduced GPUaaS (GPU subscription service) based on Nvidia's B300 GPUs through its cloud, SCP (Samsung Cloud Platform), in March. Then in July, it launched NPUaaS (NPU subscription service) on SCP, powered by FuriosaAI's second-generation NPU Renegade (RNGD), a Korea-made neural processing unit (NPU) specialized for AI inference.
Lee Ho-jun, Samsung SDS head of cloud services division (executive vice president), said, "Through this project, we will provide stable services so domestic researchers can deliver innovative results based on world-class AI infrastructure," adding, "We will continue to broaden the base of the national AI research infrastructure and help enhance Korea's AI competitiveness."
