In the second quarter of this year, global smartphone market revenue hit a record high for a second quarter, as the rise in average selling price (ASP) offset a decline in shipments.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 5th, global smartphone market revenue in the second quarter of this year rose 7% from a year earlier to $109 billion. Shipments fell, but revenue increased as the average selling price climbed 17%. The average selling price was $400, a record high for a second quarter.
By corporations, Apple ranked first with a 49% revenue share. Revenue rose 22% from a year earlier, marking a record high for a second quarter. Shipments and the average selling price increased 13% and 8%, respectively.
Samsung Electronics ranked second with a 16% revenue share. Revenue and shipments each increased 9% from a year earlier, while the average selling price held roughly steady from the prior year.
By contrast, Xiaomi saw shipments drop 26% and revenue fall 17%, the steepest declines among the top five companies. Although the average selling price rose 13%, demand appears to have weakened significantly. Oppo and Vivo also posted average selling price gains of 9% and 13%, respectively, but revenue fell 10% and 11% due to lower shipments.
Counterpoint Research said, "As memory shortages and rising costs will be hard to resolve in the short term, smartphone manufacturers are expected to continue pricing increases and sales strategies centered on higher value-added products," and added, "In the second half, the decline in smartphone shipments could widen further, so the average selling price is expected to keep rising for the time being."
