The Broadcasting Media Communications Review Committee said on the 5th that, in cooperation with Telegram, it has improved the effectiveness of its response to the illegal webtoon site "Newtoki" and its mirror sites.
Over about three months since mid-April, the committee requested corrective measures such as deletion and access blocking for a total of 7,342 instances of illegal copyright infringement information, including 2,200 Newtoki mirror sites.
In consultation with the Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC), it also blocked the practice of overseas illegal sites bypassing access blocks by using domestic cache servers, by directly providing the block list to content delivery network (CDN) operators.
The committee plans to respond more quickly to mirror sites by expanding reviews to three or more times a week from the previous twice a week once an electronic review system for copyright infringement information is introduced in the second half.
The committee said, "Illegal webtoon sites threaten the K-content ecosystem and are a serious social problem that serve as a hotbed for secondary crimes such as gambling," and added, "We will continue to work with global platforms such as Telegram and cooperate with related agencies to respond effectively to second and third Newtoki cases."
