OpenAI said on the 4th that it will hold "OpenAI Game Builders Seoul" in Seoul on the 31st.
This event is OpenAI's first global event on game development using Codex. With support from Com2uS, it will run under the slogan "Build with Codex, Play with HYBE."
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent that supports software development end to end, including writing and editing code and testing, based on natural-language commands. HYBE is Com2uS's game backend platform that provides functions needed to operate game services, such as login, payments, user analytics, and security.
Participants will develop games using a "vibe coding" method with Codex, then apply functions needed for game services by linking with HYBE through the Codex plugin.
Developers from Korea's game industry, including Song Jae-kyung, former XLGAMES CEO who led development of the flagship domestic massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) "The Kingdom of the Winds" and "Lineage," will take part to share experiences in AI-powered game development. Song plans to introduce how he came to rejoin game development using Codex. OpenAI said it will announce additional speakers on the event website.
The event will run on two tracks. In "Track 1 — Turning ideas into reality: building games with Codex," participants will present games developed in advance. "Track 2 — 5-hour challenge" will feature a hackathon to build games using the latest Codex within a limited time.
The Track 1 winning teams will receive a total of $50,000 in OpenAI API credits and a one-year ChatGPT Pro license. Track 2 top teams will also receive a one-year ChatGPT Pro license, and all finalists will receive $100 in OpenAI API credits.
Applications will be accepted on the event website from today through the 26th. Applicants must submit a game prototype developed with Codex and their development experience, and 40 teams selected through screening will join the offline event on the 31st.
Oliver Jay, OpenAI's head of international business, said, "Korea is a country with world-class game development capability and a creative developer community, making it the best place to create new possibilities where games and AI meet," adding, "Through this event, we hope legendary developers who have led Korea's game industry and a new generation of developers will share their experiences and ideas using Codex, and expand a new game development culture created with AI."
