Samsung Electronics will start construction at the end of this year to build additional production facilities in Taylor, Texas. The new facility, "Taylor 2," is aiming to begin mass production in 2030.
Samsung Electronics said on the 30th during its second-quarter earnings conference call, "To respond in a timely manner to rising customer demand, we are preparing to start construction of Taylor 2 at the end of this year, with the goal of mass production in 2030."
Samsung Electronics said the pace of expanding leading-edge process capacity is not keeping up with the increase in customer demand. The existing Taylor production facility is proceeding as planned with preparations to begin operations this year, and the company will subsequently increase 2-nanometer (nm; one-billionth of a meter) production capacity in stages.
The company said, "At present, the pace of ramping up leading-edge processes is not keeping up with demand," and added, "We have drawn up plans to expand leading-edge process production capacity in response."
Samsung Electronics earlier said it won 2-nanometer projects from major cloud service providers (CSPs) and artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) customers. It expects the number of 2-nanometer project wins this year to more than double from a year earlier.
