Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman met at OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco and discussed ways to cooperate in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.
OpenAI said on the 26th that Lee and Altman met on the morning of the 25th (local time) at its San Francisco headquarters. OpenAI did not disclose specific discussion points or the agenda, but observers said the two sides likely discussed expanding cooperation in AI infrastructure, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), DRAM, and advanced foundry.
They also may have discussed an "AI transition" plan to apply Generative AI across Samsung Electronics' operations. Samsung Electronics is among OpenAI's largest global corporate customers and has decided to introduce ChatGPT and the AI coding tool Codex to all employees.
Samsung Electronics and OpenAI also signed a strategic partnership in October last year and have pursued cooperation to expand production of advanced memory semiconductors and build next-generation AI infrastructure. OpenAI regards the cooperation framework it established with the Korean government, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and others as the first country-level strategic partnership released in the Asia-Pacific region.
Earlier, on the 24th, Altman met with President Lee Jae-myung and also attended the San Francisco AI Summit.
