Amazon has laid off some employees in its artificial general intelligence (AGI) business unit.
According to Reuters on the 22nd, Amazon carried out staff cuts in its AGI business unit this time after conducting a large-scale restructuring of 16,000 employees early this year.
It was reported to include employees in the AGI data services institutional sector and the AGI information institutional sector, but the exact scale of the layoffs was not identified.
Key executives who had led the AGI organization at Amazon were also recently replaced in succession. Rohit Prasad, who oversaw the AGI organization, left the company late last year, and David Luan, head of the AGI lab, also resigned in February this year. Accordingly, the work was integrated under Senior Vice President (SVP) Peter DeSantis, who also oversees semiconductor development and Quantum Computing.
Amazon said, "We have built large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models for years, and this remains one of the most important initiatives we are pursuing," noting that the layoffs do not mean it is stepping away from AI model development. On the background of the AGI organization staff cuts, it said, "We are restructuring so we can move faster on what matters by focusing on the most important plans."
