Fortinet is joining hands with Intel to develop next-generation security-dedicated semiconductors.
On the 22nd, Fortinet said it will ramp up development of the next-generation security processor, the "Fortinet Security Processor 6 (SP6)," with Intel. The goal is to develop a security processor that integrates multiple security and networking functions into a single chip.
The two companies plan to combine Fortinet's custom security processor technology with Intel's semiconductor design, packaging, and manufacturing capabilities to develop the SP6.
So far, Fortinet has used its self-developed custom semiconductor (ASIC) as a security processor to boost firewall performance 17 times and encryption processing speed 32 times compared with a general Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Power consumption was reduced by 88%.
Ken Xie, Fortinet founder and chief executive officer (CEO), said, "Fortinet is the only cybersecurity company that leverages custom ASICs, and for more than 20 years our self-developed security processors have supported the security performance and efficiency customers demand," adding, "By expanding collaboration with Intel, we will strengthen our ASIC strategy by leveraging semiconductor technology, manufacturing expertise, and global supply chain capabilities, and provide broader support to customers worldwide."
