Samsung Electronics on the 15th unveiled a new display technology, "Flex Titanium," to be used for the first time in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It strengthens the display's durability while dramatically improving screen creases to deliver a smoother, more polished viewing experience.
Flex Titanium uses a titanium alloy film instead of a plastic film. Samsung Electronics said it chose titanium, which features high elasticity and high rigidity, after researching thin, sturdy materials suitable for durability and resilience that can withstand repeated folding and unfolding and external shocks, as well as for precise design.
Titanium is reliable enough to be used as components in extreme environments such as space and aviation, but its high elasticity and rigidity posed technological challenges for application to foldable displays that must fold thinly and flexibly.
Samsung overcame the constraints with differentiated technology. First, the "titanium alloy film" beneath the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel inside the display is made of advanced titanium alloy material, securing about 20 times higher rigidity than a polymer film and helping improve durability and screen creases. Through an ultra-precision rolling process, it was made as thin as about one-third the thickness of an average human hair, contributing to slimming down the display panel.
The "titanium plate," located below the titanium alloy film and serving as a support when the display is folded or unfolded, greatly reduced the size of micro-holes at the folding area through advanced machining technology. As a result, it achieves a robust adhesive structure that stably supports the screen when the device is unfolded and maximizes flexibility when folded. It also contributed to a groundbreaking improvement in creases. Samsung Electronics said, "Flex Titanium technology, which achieves a perfect balance of powerful durability, smooth flexibility, and structural stability, will set a new standard for foldable display technology with its thin design and innovative crease improvement."
Mun Sung-hoon, vice president in charge of hardware at the MX Division of Samsung Electronics, said, "Samsung's competitiveness lies in the combination of a deep understanding of consumer needs and technologies that deliver real value in everyday life," adding, "The next-generation Galaxy foldable, newly born from years of accumulated display technology know-how, will deliver an unprecedented viewing experience and completely reinvent the user experience."
