SK Telecom created a task force reporting directly to the chief executive officer (CEO) to push in earnest for building an artificial intelligence data center (AI DC), one of the three "Korea's great leap forward mega projects."
According to SK Telecom on the 15th, the company recently set up the "AI DC integrated task force" reporting directly to CEO Jung Jai-hun. Jeong Seok-geun, head of the AI company-in-company (CIC), was appointed to lead the task force.
The task force consists of a business development unit and an engineering and construction unit. It is seen as a move to accelerate execution by streamlining the system to manage the entire process from selecting the AI DC site to construction and customer acquisition.
SK Telecom oversees SK Group's AI DC buildout with a capacity of 15 GW (gigawatts), totaling 140 trillion won. The plan is to expand the project nationwide, starting in Ulsan and then to Yeongnam and Honam.
The company said, "We are currently in the stage of forming the organization, with SK Telecom executives participating in dual roles," and added, "If needed, personnel from group affiliates will also join."
The government is promoting AI DCs as one of the three "Korea's great leap forward mega projects" to expand AI computing infrastructure. SK earlier announced a private investment plan.
