The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) said on the 18th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Anthropic for cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI) safety and cybersecurity.
Under the agreement, the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) under the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Anthropic agreed to actively pursue cooperation to ensure AI safety. In cybersecurity, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and Anthropic will jointly identify AI vulnerabilities and quickly share expertise and related information on cyber threats.
Through this agreement, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) plans to conduct an in-depth analysis of how AI affects cyber offense and defense. It will assess AI model safety and misuse risks in Korean-language contexts and further strengthen its cooperation framework with Anthropic to secure the safety of advanced AI, including red-team evaluations of autonomous AI agents.
The agreement was pursued as a follow-up to cooperation measures discussed when Bae Kyung-hoon, vice minister, met with Anthropic Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dario Amodei during the 2026 India AI Impact Summit in February.
In tandem with the agreement, Anthropic on the 17th formally opened its Korea office as its fourth outpost after Japan, India and Australia, positioning it as a beachhead and key strategic hub for the Asian market.
With this, the government has completed its cooperation network with global AI big tech, adding Anthropic to its partnerships with Nvidia, OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
After the MoU signing, Lee Do-gyu, director general for telecommunications policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), met with Chris Chauri, Anthropic's global head, to discuss directions for cooperation in AI safety and cybersecurity. Chauri said, "Korea is one of Anthropic's most important markets in the Asia-Pacific region," adding, "The signing of this agreement is meaningful in that it lays the groundwork for long-term cooperation in Korea." Chauri continued, "Working with government entities that share the value of developing AI that is safe and responsible is core to how Anthropic operates," and added, "We look forward to further developing this partnership with Korea's AI ecosystem."
The Deputy Minister said, "The next two to three years in the global AI market are a pivotal battleground and a golden time," adding, "This cooperation will be a powerful driving force that, on the solid foundation of safety and security, broadens the horizon of Korea's AI innovation and adds dynamism."
