Global data center specialist STT GDC said on the 16th that it opened Korea's first data center, "STT Seoul 1," in the Gasan Digital Complex in Seoul and will step up its push into the Korean market.
"STT Seoul 1" was built in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon District, Seoul, with a total floor area of about 40,000 square meters. It supports up to 30 megawatts (MW) of IT load and began commercial operation this month. It was designed to support high-density workloads and a range of hyperscale and enterprise environments.
The data center is being developed and operated by STT GDC Korea, a joint venture established with 60% equity from STT GDC and 40% equity from Hyosung Heavy Industries.
The company said "STT Seoul 1" was built from the design stage with a focus on uninterrupted operations and energy efficiency. Earlier, it obtained Tier III design certification (TCDD) from global rating agency Uptime Institute, verifying its nonstop operations and high availability.
The cooling system operates stably without interruption through a design with a planned PUE (power usage effectiveness) of under 1.3 and a thermal energy storage (TES) tank. Another feature is thorough physical security via seven security layers, including intelligent video analytics and biometrics.
The building applies the highest seismic special grade, equivalent to nuclear power plant-level seismic design. The power infrastructure is dualized with two 22.9-kilovolt (kV) primary and backup feeders.
Heo Cheolhoe, head of STT GDC Korea, said, "This data center will serve as a key base for STT GDC to establish a foothold in Korea and expand its business into major markets in Northeast Asia."
Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon said, "As AI competitiveness is national competitiveness, we have moved to build a data center that will serve as the 'heart' of AI in the capital region." "'STT Seoul 1' will be a core infrastructure for Korea's AI industry and a new growth engine for Hyosung," the chair said.
