Following Samsung Electronics' official adoption of external generative artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT, SK hynix is also moving to expand the use of external AI models.
Citing protection of national core technologies, the semiconductor industry had been cautious about using external AI, but it is shifting strategy to integrate Generative AI across operations in response to intensifying global tech competition and demands for productivity innovation.
According to the industry on the 12th, SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung said at the CEO town hall of the "New Icheon Forum" held the previous day at the SKMS Research Institute in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, that the company plans to introduce external Generative AI.
At the event, Kwak told employees, "We are reviewing the introduction of Microsoft (MS) 365 and Copilot, and we are also looking into the possibility of using ChatGPT Enterprise," adding, "We plan to gradually introduce external AI starting with areas unrelated to national core technologies and expand its scope of use."
SK hynix currently uses open-source-based Generative AI models, but the move is seen as a strategy to fully leverage big techs' Generative AI across research and development (R&D), data analysis, and other operations to drive work efficiency.
Because semiconductors are a national core industry, there had been caution in using external AI, but as global competition intensifies and the pace of industrial change accelerates, corporations are rushing to adopt AI.
Kwak also emphasized, "In the AI era, what matters is not who knows more, but who learns and changes faster," adding, "We will need to redesign each person's work together with AI."
Kwak added that the process of experiencing AI and changing the way people work will lead to new competitiveness for the company, expressing a willingness to actively support AI adoption.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics' device experience (DX) institutional sector said on the 12th that it will officially introduce external Generative AI services for employees.
Going forward, DX institutional sector employees will be able to use all Generative AI in-house, including ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise, and Claude.
