The Ministry of Science and ICT will launch an investigation into damages from the leak of member information at TVING, an online video service (OTT).
The ministry said on the 3rd that it formed a public-private joint investigation team and began a full-fledged probe to examine the damage status and the cause of the incident stemming from the TVING member information leak.
TVING reported the breach on the 1st. After that, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) requested data preservation from TVING and conducted an investigation into the cause of the incident and the scale of the damage.
After urgently convening the breach investigation review committee, it concluded that the incident constituted a serious case, requiring the formation of a public-private joint investigation team.
The public-private joint investigation team includes private-sector experts in forensics and cloud services, in addition to the Ministry of Science and ICT and KISA.
In addition, the Ministry of Science and ICT issued a nationwide security notice on the Boho Nara website to prevent possible secondary damage such as smishing that exploits the leaked information.
According to the notice, user caution is needed as voice phishing or the installation of malicious apps is expected using keywords such as compensation for damages, inquiry into damage facts, and refunds.
Meanwhile, TVING said in a recent notice that it confirmed member personal information was leaked due to unauthorized external access. The leaked personal information includes member ID, name, date of birth, gender, phone number, and email. It does not hold resident registration numbers or valid payment-related information, so they are not subject to leakage. The scale of the leak is being identified.
