The Samsung Group Supra-Enterprise Labor Union Samsung Electronics Chapter, the largest union at Samsung Electronics, is putting its general strike plan on hold and launching a vote by members on a tentative wage agreement.
On the 20th, the joint struggle headquarters of the supra-enterprise union's Samsung Electronics Chapter notified members of "Struggle Directive No. 3" and said, "The general strike that had been scheduled from May 21 to June 7 is deferred until separate instructions are issued."
The union then advised, "All members should participate in the vote on the 2026 tentative wage agreement from 2 p.m. on May 22 to 10 a.m. on May 27."
The decision is seen as stemming from Samsung Electronics labor and management reaching common ground on producing a tentative agreement through post-mediation by the National Labor Relations Commission and government mediation. Previously, Samsung Electronics labor and management had been engaged in last-minute talks over revamping the performance bonus system and how to allocate funds for special performance bonuses.
With the union's previously announced general strike put on hold for now, some say concerns over disruptions to semiconductor production have eased. However, there is also speculation that if the tentative agreement is voted down by members, the possibility of a general strike could resurface.
